About us

Formed in 2019. DESPERATE DAN have played to sell out audiences - HARD ROCK CAFE, EDINBURGH JAZZ BAR, WHIGHAMS JAZZ BAR, DRYGATE BREWERY, GARAGE, ETC.

Taking a break during COVID we returned to the Drygate 2024.

It all began with a shared love for Steely Dan and a desire to create unforgettable music. As DESPERATE DAN, we pride ourselves on our high-energy performances and dedication to every gig. Our approach is rooted in musical quality and raw energy, ensuring that everything we do reflects our commitment to rocking the stage.

"The venue was set out with tables and chairs, so instantly gave an intimate atmosphere, The band started off with a jazz/blues arrangement that showed off the six piece brass section's prowess. Then the three vocalists took the stage. All female, they took turns with the lead vocals, each bringing different qualities to Steely Dan's back catalogue of songs from their first four albums. Do It Again got the night going and the audience quickly warmed to the singers. The two guitarists took turns at the tricky solos throughout the night with effortless playing, underpinned by a grooving rhythm section. The signature electric piano sound was also brilliantly delivered. The second set kicked off with the crowd pleaser Reelin' In The Years, but highlights of the evening for our party were Pretzel Logic and Bodhisattva, but each song was applauded by an appreciative and I would say impressed audience. A great night out in a cool venue.
